Books, Purpose, Community on Central Ave

Ossining's independent bookshop where every sale funds literacy programs across the Hudson Valley.

About Us

Hudson Valley Books for Humanity earns a 4.9-star rating from 75 readers, and that number is not an accident. Regulars describe it as the place they went looking for and actually found: a shop on 67 Central Ave that carries books, vinyl records, gifts, and knick-knacks without ever feeling like a warehouse. The cause is built into the name. Proceeds support humanitarian literacy initiatives, so every purchase does double duty.

Saturday-night reading events draw crowds. Owners Rob and Amy run the floor themselves, fielding recommendations with the fluency of people who have actually read the inventory. The environment lands somewhere between cozy neighborhood living room and progressive community hub, a combination Ossining had been missing. Westchester has bookstores. It has fewer bookstores that feel like a civic act.

What We Offer

Books anchor the floor, spanning fiction, nonfiction, local interest, and titles you will not find at a chain. Staff recommendations are specific, not algorithmic. Ask for a suggestion and expect a real answer.

Vinyl Records share shelf space with the books, which tells you something about the curation philosophy here. Gifts and Decorations round out the inventory for shoppers who arrive for one thing and leave with three. The shop also hosts Reading Events on a regular schedule, including Saturday-night gatherings that function as genuine literary community rather than promotional theatre. Every transaction, from a single paperback to a full gift basket, channels revenue toward the organization's broader humanitarian mission.

Why Choose Us

4.9-star rating across 75 verified reviews, one of the highest-rated bookshops in Westchester County.
Owner-operated by Rob and Amy, who provide hands-on recommendations drawn from real reading, not a sales algorithm.
Inventory spans books, vinyl records, gifts, and decor, curated as a single coherent collection, not random filler.
Every purchase directly funds Hudson Valley literacy and humanitarian programs, making the act of buying a book consequential.
Regular reading events, including Saturday-night sessions, build a standing literary community in downtown Ossining.
Independent, locally rooted, and mission-driven since founding, with no corporate parent diluting the shelf selections.

"I went looking for a home to haunt and a place to adore—books, cause, and community— and I think this might be the place for me. I found the place in an exploration of Westchester’s coziest places and this did not disappoint. You just have to visit and take it all in. It’s the very best of bookstore, creatives haven, kids’ space, and marketplace for hand crafted art. Natalie, Betsy, and the owner Amy are all incredible women who clearly add the magic and warmth to the space. Now all that leaves is you! Go visit! Via train or driving there yourself, it’s so worth it. There’s great food and excellent coffee close by so you can make an afternoon of it. My favorite part is all the notes and stories and handwritten flourishes to the shelves, walls, and items. Something about it just adds to how homey and pleasant the vibes are. Absolutely going back again and again."
